A kominka (古民家) is a traditional folk house, typically pre-war, built from a heavy timber frame with mortise-and-tenon joinery rather than nails. The vocabulary is distinctive: a doma earth-floored working area at the entrance, an irori sunken hearth, thick keyaki or hinoki posts, and the engawa veranda this company is named after.

They are the most rewarding and the most demanding buildings in the Japanese market. The frames are often in remarkable condition after a century because they were built to be dismantled and repaired; the roofs, wiring, insulation and plumbing rarely are. A serious kominka restoration is craftsman work and can exceed the cost of building new — which is precisely why the ones done well are extraordinary.
